My husband and I are currently shopping for infant child care in downtown Seattle. I have toured, observed, and interviewed with 3 centers thus far and am on waiting lists for all 3. Each time I do this (combined with on-line research and networking with other parents based on their experiences at the facility) it takes 1-3 hours. I am shopping 9-12 months in advance of when we need care and no one has room for us. I expect to tour up to 12 centers total and will likely end up on 6-10 waiting lists. We're looking at $1200-1600 a month for full-time child care (many centers do not offer part-time care). For the next 4 years of our child's life, that monthly fee may go down to $900 per month and may stay above $1000 per month. The quality rating and improvement system in front of the legislature now (HB 1663, SB 5828) will help address the issues with lack of information around quality and the cost factor. It's a first step. Speak up and tell them you demand affordable, accessible, high-quality care!

The time caregivers spend with young children can make a difference in a child’s growth and development. In King County there are fun Play and Learn Groups for caregivers and kids. Several organizations sponsor about 40 different groups accross the County.
Interested? Child Care Resources has a list of Play and Learn Groups on their Website: http://www.childcare.org/ffn-care/play-and-learn.htm. |

The Early Care and Education Coalition is sending out a message listing some resouces to help parents find high-quality child care. A Web site with a number of handy tools for parents is Child Care Aware (from the association of child care resource & referral agencies), at http://www.childcareaware.org/en/
This site describes types of care, and how to evaluate a provider. It even has an "Average Rates Finder." Just enter your zip code, and it will tell you the average cost of care in your area! What have you found that's been helpful in choosing a good child care or preschool? |
