Kaplan Hands-on Books
Open up a world of discovery and expression with Kaplan Hands-on Books! Developed in partnership with RealeBooks and Hewlett-Packard, Kaplan Hands-on Books is a web-driven program that enables students and teachers to author, publish and distribute picture books that supplement their curriculum – at a small fraction of the cost of commercially distributed children's books. Create, Print, Share, Grow: Kaplan Hands-on Books projects augment classroom reading and writing curricula, providing successful learning experiences. Combining award-winning RealeWriterPro software and online digital libraries with quality HP digital cameras and printers, Kaplan Hands-on Books Publishing Centers make it easy for teachers and students in Pre-K through 5th grade to create picture books that can be printed at school for sharing at home, posted on the school's eLibrary (browse Kaplan Hands-on Books Sample Online Library), and distributed through email to friends and family. In addition to affordable software and hardware, we offer professional development workshops to help you integrate book creation into your lesson plans across the entire curriculum, adapt the program for various age groups and grade levels, and accommodate special student populations, such as English language learners (ELL). To learn more about Kaplan Hands-on Books visit our website at www.kaplanco.com and click on the Publishing & Custom Kits tab. |

Research shows the academic achievement gap we see in school-aged kids starts as a preparation gap. A 4 year-old from a high-income household has been exposed to over twice as many words as a 4 year-old from a low-income household. Imagine the time lost in learning! ALL children should start school on a level playing field. Support high-quality early learning every where a child is!

| YYOL | Empowering kids to discover their inner "cheer" leader. | Early Learning Tools and Resources | 0 | Feb 22 2008, 5:41 PM EST by YYOL | |||

A children’s self esteem program for use in early learning environments (3-8 year olds) through child care, educators (pre K-2nd grade), parents and children’s ministry.
The core of the program that I feel is unique to other projects available is two fold: 1) YYOL sends the message early as a foundational building block that when the going gets tough, you are your own best “cheer” leader; vs. a “fix it” later remedy. 2) The YEAH YEAH Out Loud theme helps the child realize the “cheer” leader lies within. The picture book story of Hur-Ray encouraging Kiddazy to grow into a flower and get a YYOL face (just like Hur-Ray’s) confirms that it is only after Kiddazy cheers on the other sprouts in a “pay it forward” fashion, does the understanding that it is in the cheering on of others, lies Kiddazy’s own self-esteem, and YYOL is actualized. The “program package” includes: -YEAH YEAH Out Loud; the story of Hur-Ray and Kiddazy -Hur-Ray and Kiddazy puppets -Download access for education/activity guides and worksheets -Stickers to use with/for kids -All in a YYOL tote bag It is currently being used in day care, Kindergarten, 1st grade, Children’s ministry, various counseling outlets, a library district in eastern WA, and Portland Parks and Rec, YWCA-Vancouver is reviewing and testing now! We currently have the suggested script for the book translated into German and Spanish. The book itself has no words, (our program is applicable through 2nd grade; although we also have seen it put to great use with high school kids mentoring to the younger ones….). Thanks for being a Cheer Leader! Yeah Yeah www.yeahyeahoutloud.com KF Carpenter 360-901-4260 |

Has there been any research done on the effects of TV and Autism my grandson was put in front of the TV when he was 2 months old, he was a responsive normal baby until age 2, when a cloud descended over him . He was identified with Autism at 26 months. He is now 12 years old and his relationship with the TV continues to be his greatest source of confort.

In a child's first years, interaction with loved ones is far more important and educational than TV!!! TV will never cuddle you, show affection, give encouragement or provide comfort when you're hurt. Your baby needs YOU more than TV!!!

TV, computers and other media are a large part of our society so we should not try to remove it or its influence from our children's daily lives. Sharing that time together to talk about what it all means and choosing age approriate shows in important. Asking "what are they trying to sell us, and do we need it?" is helpful during commericals, and talking about what is happening in the story can turn a potential mindless viewing session into learning moments. And, as in all things, use in moderation!

There is so much in this world to experience tactility that gives a child a sense of their relationship to the world, I can't imagine introducing tv to a child until they have learned to explore this world on their own. I would like to see us raise doers not watchers.

I hope that as a result of new, or less expensive technology (especially around media), parents are also able to make educated decisions about those technologies in regards to their children and families.
Common sense media is a great source for reviews of movies, TV shows and other media, for parents and families: http://www.commonsensemedia.org/ |

We have developed a reality based cognitive learning program for early childhood education. Our program is computer based and was piloted with an elementary school within the Lynwood School District of California. Please keep this in mind that the only change in their curricula was our program. After using the program for one year, their API (similar to our WASL) test scores went up 114 points. They scored the highest out of 5000 elementary schools. Most schools will increase 10 to 15 points per year. The school that used our program with students between kindergarten through 4th grade raised their scores 114 points, this is exceptional news! Since then, three of the schools within in the Lynwood school district will be using our program through the remaining school year. In the 07-08 school year all twelve of the schools will be using our program. If you would like to learn more about our program please contact: Ryanw@realityworkscompany.com. One of our three programs is called BeSchoolReady, please take a look at our website: www.BeSchoolReady.com

As a grandfather, I play with my grandkids - follow their lead and go with it. We make great connections, laughing, and enjoying the time. I think this builds relationship and it makes me feel younger, too! We both benefit.
